I fired on the bombers as i blew through the formation, not wanting to loose them like i did last week i turned but still had fighters behind me and had to dive away from the zekes. After that i lost the rest of the Mongrels and was surounded by red, one of them shot off my wing and i bailed out.

Whoops!  I was typing this one up while Malap posted the first one.

I gotta say, WTFG!!!! That frame was one of those that make up for so many other nights of dismal slaughter and bad mistakes.

The Mongrels scored the most kills and assists of any squadron.   right_salute
The Allied Kill board started with this..

Top 10 Pilots (Kills)
 Pilot # Kills
Baumer   7
 kansas2   6

 Strokes   5
 DCcBOSS   5
 KillrDan   5
 jededi   5
 bongboy   5
 Viper1   4
 termite   4
 Spite   4

Top 2 are Mongrels!  WTG Baumer and Kansas!!    right_salute A pair of "Ace in a Day" awards for these 2!

And a special  right_salute to Vaderr for clearing that A6M3 off my 6!

A big  right_salute to JDOG and Droptine for textbook execution of the scouting function by locating the enemy in such a fashion to allow us to rally the forces and make our directed attack!

I will have some more goodies to point out on the stats update post when I get those files moved over to the server.

Gentlemen.. you really shined last night.   I hope that it makes up for some of the slow nights we've had the last year or so.

Now.. since this is an AAR.. let's review some lessons learned over the last 2 frames.

In my opinion, the close escort fighter mission is one of the most difficult tasks to master in the world of air combat.  This is not so much due to the complexity of the task at hand, that's pretty simple.. don't let bad guys kill your charges, it's the mental aspect of staying with your bombers and not getting pulled away to chase the bad guys.  It is sooo easy to pursue that final kill that many lose sight of their true mission.    Which leads to dead bombers.  Lots of them.

What we've seen from our opponents is, quite possibly, the WORST escort methodology you can apply to the bomber/escort model.  This applies to all bombers types that are not blessed with devastating head on defensive armament.  Which, safe to say, is every bomber in Aces High with the exclusion of B17s, B24s, and B29s.

It seemed that all the escorts were above and behind the bomber force.  What sort of thinking is this?  Using bombers to bait the enemy so you can sweep in and pick off guys suffering from target fixation on the big targets?

We saw no lead escorts, sweeps, or interceptions of our fighter groups before we intercepted the bombers.  None.  And even after our initial contact, it was way too long before the abundant escorts started whittling us down.

Our tactic of utilizing scouts to locate the bomber force, engaging with straight through frontal assault on the bombers, then recovering to clean up worked nearly to perfection last night. I say 'nearly' because we lost 4 pilots. Considering the size of the force we encountered, that's still a pretty low number.   And.. it is better than frame 2.

So.. having said all that, in the future, when we are tasked with escorting our own bombers.. or that of another group, be sure to share our experience and prevent another squad from doing the same unto us..   icon_biggrin

Gentlemen.. Again.. WTG!!

Extra Bacon Kibbles all around!!

Wish I could have been there. Those kinds of missions only happen once or twice a year. Most excellent. Smiley

GREAT job gents !  occasion14

Sorry I was AWOL... Friday night was our HS football spring jamboree, cook out, etc.
Still "should have" made it home in plenty of time for FSO... but.... The players always play
a quick little 2 quarter practice game as part of the festivities.. green v/s white ( school colors ).

My son is a starting receiver this year ( yay ! ) and second play of the second quarter caught a beautiful
pass but unfortunately the defender lead the tackle head first and "crack".. helmet to helmet tackle..
My son was out cold... Scary as you can imagine.. ! I literally scaled the fence and ran out into the field.
At that point the officals can just kiss my grits... I'm going to my boy... !

Anyhoo.. 6 hours at the hospital and 12 stiches to the chin later.. ( something layed his chin wide open..
chin strap maybe ?... who knows ) we arrived home..

He is doing fine... still a little groggy still today.. we are keeping a close eye on him... he remembers everything
so I think he will be aok  thumbsup. Good thing he is hard headed like his old man !

I plan on hopefully being around for tonight.  See you gents soon !

Again big <S> to all...   BigB..

You're quite welcome, Harppa!  Glad to know it made an impression.

Thanks to Baumer for providing the Betty-Backlighting that made such an impact on the pic.

 right_salute

BigB.. Dude..  sorry about your boy!  Stuff like that sickens me..   Yeah, I know it's part of the sport.. but there's no reason kids should be expected to be so intense against their own teammates..

Follow the DRs orders on the rest and relaxation bit.  My daughter had  a mild concussion from volleyball last year.  That was no fun either.

Gentlemen!!   right_salute

There is not much I can really add to what has been said thus far......Yet I am    icon_biggrin   I think we all saw how not to provide escort for bombers as Drone has pointed out.   Lets make sure we NEVER make that mistake, deal?  My second comment is this..... I am very happy everyone stayed together, and flew and fought as a unit.   One of the things I  do not like to see is us all scattered about, we have done a good job at not doing that,  and I want it to definitely continue    Smiley

A huge  right_salute to Baumer,  he has had tons going on as of late and some tough to deal with family issues..... I hope Friday gave you that few minutes of taking your mind off those things, you were looking for.

To Drone   right_salute  Thanks for leading the spits, with basically no notice at all.  I know I caught you off guard with that one.

Droptine:    occasion14  Great wingman flying in the scouting role, I know it can be boring.   I just really like scouting and with having 2 oddball Hurri's...... Seemed the best way to go....... FWIW  NO! You can't change wingmen, your stuck with me now  Wink

To the rest of you, GREAT JOB!!!  Hope everyone had fun, and see ya tonight!!  thumbsup

That is all   right_salute

Really amazing how fragile the Betty is. My engine was out and had to dead stick land which
was icing on the cake and made this frame really enjoyable!    icon_biggrin

Thought I filmed but can't find it.    BangHead
