AD ASTRA PER ASPERA

« on: September 09, 2010, 06:27:44 PM »

I have a 1 TB Western Digital external that, for some reason, says it's almost full when I only have about 500 G on it right now.  I can't delete back ups etc and I don't have enough space on my main comp to pull all of the files over and clean the external out.  Any ideas before I go public and expose more of my ignorance?

Got a DVD burner in your computer? Buy a stack of disks and back up your goodies on DVD.

Personally I use a double layer burner and double layer disks, lets me put over 8gigs on each disk.
But even with standard Dvd's at 4.7 gigs each you can back up a lot of data. Figure 6-8 minutes burn time per disk, a couple of hours will clean up a lot of space.

Depends on what your saving, video's will take up the most space. So you need to decide whats really worth keeping and what can easily be replaced off the net.

So once you've backed up what is really important, (including whats on your computer)
Then you should have the space to put the rest on your computer while you reformat the external drive.

I'd check to see if you have a 500GB partition set up on the HD, perhaps there is another larger partition or you have a lot of unformatted and partitioned space on it.
