Last night a watched a TV show on the P51. During the show they had surviving pilots talking about their experiences.

One pilot talked about getting bounced, he said he slammed the stick left and stood on the right rudder. I just went to the T/A and tried it, after i reviewed the film from a chase view. It looked kinda like a mini barrel roll, what does this manouver accomplish please?

I haver rudder pedals, but i don't really know how to use them properly lol.

Mal, thats known as a cross control move,it can do several things but it's main purpose is to slow down or as they say "drop E". It's likely you saw, could be way off here,a stall turn that causes the higher enemy to over shoot. Several WWII pilots reported doing these things to turn the tables on the enemy, dogfights showed an example of this on their P51 show.

The thing to remember is the alt that the pilots were flying at,15k to 30k,this gave them plenty of alt to work with and used to recover the stall, spin and or energy. The typical alt in the MA usually doesn't give you a chance to use this, that said it's good practice in A/C control.
