Well one thing that was for sure, we didn't have to wait for the action to start . Nothing like the feeling of having a bunch of zeros 6k above you, while in heavy SBD'd without fighter cover . and ran into them before even getting to out loitering position. Once the Unforgiven showed up at least there was some chance of survival so I ran for the fighter cover along with some others, I saw Morph and Bison with me. There the furball started and I tried to call any survivors back to the fighter cover, but I'm sure there were a lot of us scattered by then. I think there was about 5 of us left after the first engagement from B flight. Some of us actually got revenge on a few zero's, while they were mixed in with Unforgiven. So we soldier on toward the carriers last location, we have a few 4f4s (not sure from what squad at this point), in front of us that I'm trying to trail to have some support for us. Daddog radios me that I may catch the zero's re-arming on the deck if I get there quickly since they got drug down to the deck engaging A-flight and may be low on ammo. So I leveled out at about 7k feet. Well just about 2 minutes after leveling out, I see cons at our height and it looks like a dogfight. My hope was that this was the Unforgiven taking on the carriers zero CAP, and they would be kept busy enough that what's left of B flight can sneak through. Unfortuantely it was about two to one red guys there , so needless to say we didn't sneak through and the second engagement ensued. I almost broke through but a lone zero saw me and ran me down so I had to turn back into the furball. Ran out of forward guns and I think ASAdog, had those two zekes to shoot at that were pretty intent on killing us. I used the dive brakes and got them to overshoot but lost so much airspeed that I ended up making a boat out of the SBD. By the way thanks ASA for being my gunner, I'm sure you kept us alive in that second furball, until we took our boat ride . I think we all kept our bombs till the end just in case one of us from B-flight could get through and complete our mission, even though it made it harder for us to survive , Albeit the thought crossed my mind to toss them, especially on the first engagement where we were pretty much in the same situation the B-25's were on the deck and we attacked them with high 110's with little fighter cover a couple of weeks ago. I think we did as good as could be expected given the circumstances, and I hope I did ok for everyone leading B-flight. Guess the fuel level discussion before takeoff was kinda a moot point after all BigRat

I see some kills in the logs. GREAT JOB for those who were able to kill any airborne target in either of those planes. That's kinda like our boys beating the Ruskies at Lake placid in 1980.
If we are gonna go looking for carriers in the future... can we PLEASE try a different strategy? Something like sending the bombers off together in a safe direction to loiter, while the fighters go out in the direction of the fight to find the target and then drag the cap down. Just about the time the cap is on the deck and low on gas, BOOM-DEE-ATTA! Sending us into the fight ahead of the escorts (as usual) is (as usual ) no good.

Does anyone else hate P-38's like I do? If I see one, I will bypass a formation of enemy C-47's and go for it. Spit 16's are a close second.

Well I know I'm new to FSO, and the game really as well......But I must say I was when I looked up and saw all those zeros that soon after we took off. Looked around and saw no fighter cover anywhere had one pull in behind me so I dove and reversed as hard as I could, lost him after the third time only to have one come up from below me and me, It was a learning experience for sure. I do agree with HeavyH, we should have probably flew north to altitude then proceeded in from there, maybe we would have possibly caught the enemy a little more scattered out and low. How about that turn the carrier made while we were upping . Daddog it was a pleasure gunning for ya the torpedo found home too BigRat what can I say other than

It was a really fun night, despite the outcome. There's nothing like dogfighting in a heavy SBD with 5+ zeroes to get your sweat up For those of you that hung out for the fleet battle, however, and witnessed the biggest lack of discipline I've ever seen in an FSO (with my limited experience), it was little a dissapointing. It looks like many of the axis squads were re-upping multiple times, even changing plane types and loadouts. I don't know if re-opening a field in an FSO is ever a good idea.

Well it is all my fault guys. I am really sorry about that. Kudo's for forHIM. He called it spot on with an e-mail he sent me prior to the frame. He was worried about our route and flying into the enemy. I had a very long week and stressful week. Was absolutly beat and did not even feel like flying. If I had not already said I was going to fly I would have just gone to bed. I made several mistakes: - Not keeping us together - Not waiting for the escorts - Not communicating well between A and B flights - Not telling our escorts where we were at all times
I was just too tired to do a good job leading. Sorry guys. Did anyone live? Did any one get to the CV? I landed several rockets on it, but my torp missed. Ack killed me and j500.
Next week I am the CiC. What do you guys want? F4F's and with CV CAP duty? Escort duty?

Under the circumstances, I think you did a great job just getting to the carrier. Good work on the hits!
Frustrating night for me overall, in the MAs and in FSO. As we approached, I tried to scare off a zeke menacing Baumer, but even though I timed the ACM just right and came in 300 behind him I never landed a thing on him (as far as I can tell). After Baumer was splashed, the zeke broke off and I tucked in behind you on approach to the CV group. I ended up dropping seconds after you were vaporized by the autoack. Unfortunately, my bombs didn't get to arm (didnt look at alt, and didnt realize you had torps -- thought you had bombs too). Adding to the insult, my rockets over shot the carrier to splash in the water just after I was towered.
The real fun came when I joined Bison as his gunner. MAGNIFICENT work flying! Once we got jumped by zekes, Bison threw that plane all over the sky even though he still had bombs aboard. he maneuvered out of the attackers way so well that I could hardly get a shot off, and at times I couldnt even find the con he was evading. (Just to feel useful I threw some lead around, and ended up with an assist) Bison stayed alive in a fight that went from 7500 feet down to the deck, with a swarm of angry zekes everywhere you looked. I personally saw at least 5 different planes latch on to us at one point or another, with some being cleared by the fighters and others breaking off for other targets. We didnt take serious hits as far as I know till we were stranded on the deck.
Altogether excellent work, bud!

Sorry guys, lost track of time reading a book.
Based on the above, I'm assuming you guys got hit by the attacker's escort and then again by the CV cap.

BigRat: you had a tough job to do,considering the obstacles we faced, and we almost got to the CV. I thought you kept your head inspite of our disadvantages and did the best you could. Several of us got air to air kills in heavy loaded, slow, bombers. This shows the quality of the flyers that are in the 332nd and I each and everyone in the squad. Maybe we didn't quite have the outcome most would have liked but I had alot of fun!!! Looking at the logs I'd have to say allieds won that frame. ps: DD I'd like P39's since you asked, fast,a boatload of ammo and pretty good at low alts... my 1.5 cents CND.

I died in my plane, but did sink the last enemy Destroyer with my PT boat. Took it on head to head. Launched my rockets, then torpedoes then started blasting with the guns. Five inch shells were flying straight at me but he was shooting high! The destroyer sunk just as I was broadside of him (almost scrapping hulls), just like in an old pirate movie! Not sure if my torps hit or the gunfire sunk him, forgot to film. No more teamspeak for me. First the CV was turning and then my plane kept making a quick turn straight into the conning tower. Turned off teamspeak and was able to take off and find sondog, only to get shot down very quickly, just like usual. I think I've landed only twice in FSO. At least one was a CV landing. kansas2 23:44:39 Departed from Field #27 in a PT Boat 23:58:52 Destroyed a ship at base #29 00:03:12 Captured by enemy forces.
