Last night we tired an Nap-of-the-Earth sneak...and while it didnt work out, there's potential there for future success.
We had about 15 guys run from our second line base at 34, past the incoming horde attacking our base by heading far to the east. After a sector or so of practice, the squad did a great job of keeping the DAR bars down. It was a long flight, but we succeeded in keeping our presence a suprise right up until the time we attacked. Just inside the circle, we popped up and made for the primary targets -- the VH, the base ack, and the town.
And that's where I think I made the mistake. The new settings make base ack, especially at a medium or large base, simply terrifying...and we got picked off one by one. It was a valiant effort nonetheless. Thanks to forHIM for his willingness to take a goon the whole way in...what a long flght that was in a bicycle fast plane like the C47!
_______
I think we can get this to work better. I can think of 2 options:
1. Continue to use the surprise NOE, which helps make the defenders low in number, but change the target priority. For example, one approach would be to kill the VH, but to completely ignore the base ack. That would take away the vulch, but would save the fighters so our numbers dont get whittled down. We have a big enough squad that we could establish air superiority and wall off a quadrant from planes that up from the base. We could let them up, then as they cleared the ack we could pick them off by having better speed and position. The goon could be in a given direction, so that everyone knew to keep enemies from heading NE and to be less aggressive if they head another direction. That way we dont get spread out, and the concentration of force keeps our advantage. We might also want to refine things by including some fast buffs like 26s or Ki67s, just for the ord they carry. Then some fighters could go light, and most importantly not have to worry about bombing targets as the enemy starts to take off.
2. Or, we could try to hide in a already big DAR bar. We could have taken off from 34 (or whatever base it was) and climbed to 10-15K. We would have steered clear of both visible range, and of any radar circles. We would give up some surprise, and risk having enemies around -- but we would have a bigger advantage over the ones we come across. I'm not sure how well this would work unless we totally porked the base -- FH, BH, VH, Town. With that many targets, though, we almost guarantee that something will be missed and the capture will be compromised. If we went after a small base it might work though, and we wouldnt have to kill all the hangars.
_____
I'd love to have a pattern attack figured out, cause it would be fun to have a wave of mongrels sweep across a base and take it before anyone can react.
